Sitting around having a designer’s block may not be a bad thing. I may not meet my deadline of producing the brochure draft on time, but you may end up with unexpected benefits.
While I was just randomly reading on some of my favourites, an ad for JP Moreland’s new book caught my eye. That led me to get a chance to sample it for free (the link’s provided later on this post).
Do you feel unsatisfied or unhappy? Moreland asks the question “Why can’t I be happy?” in chapter one of his book, entitled “The God Question” (ConversantLife.com provides a free download on their website). I want to share a quote that struck me hard as I read it.
“We seldom measure a successful life by the quality of family and friendship relationships we cultivate.”
It was striking because I’ve always wanted to be significant and lead a meaningful life. Of course it’s established in my value system that increasing social status and accumulating wealth and goods are vain pursuits. But put in those simple terms, I can see why it’s been so elusive… this search for significance and purpose. It’s simply difficult, time-consuming work, this task of cultivating quality relationships.
And because of my basic human nature: it is just hard to even remember what true success is, much less to conscientiously put ourselves on the line to mend broken relationships or strengthen presently-satisfying ones. It’s just hard! And even though I know why it’s hard I can’t help but wish it could be easier. I know it isn’t hopeless, because of the work of God in my life. But don’t kid yourself: it isn’t going to be automagically fixed.
